Why Do Some People Put a Tennis Ball in Hot Tub?

Some people will put a tennis ball in their hot tub as an easy way to help remove excess hair, body oils, lotions, and greasy residue from their spa water using materials they have at home. While this method may be helpful, it is not a replacement for hot tub maintenance and often not as effective as products designed for this use, like the Beachcomber hydromop.

What Do Tennis Balls Do for Your Hot Tub?

Tennis balls are relatively absorbent since they are covered in short coarse hairs. This fuzzy outer material can absorb oily or greasy substances very easily, making it a quick fix for cloudy hot tub water. However, a tennis ball cannot actually collect all of the residue in your hot tub, nor can it actually break down the oils or organic matter. It is simply a cheap way to reduce cloudiness.

Why Use a Hydro Mop for Your Water Chemistry?

Hydro mops are designed for use in your hot tub and therefore are better equipped to pull out dirt, debris and grime from the water, keeping it balanced for longer. In most cases, your hydro mop will last between 60 to 90 days, minimizing the amount of contamination in the water and the work you will need to do to balance your chemicals.

How to Achieve Better Results with Hot Tub Maintenance

If you are dealing with cloudy, oily hot tub water after a long session, there are steps you can take to actually clean and restore your water. Cloudy water is usually an indication of imbalanced water chemistry. Applying the right hot tub chemicals can fix this.

Test strips are the best way to get an understanding of where your sanitizer levels are. If your water appears dirty and cloudy, you will likely need to apply some sanitizer and balancers. Then you can shock your water to help oxidize and break down oils and organic matter. Your water should be in pretty good shape at this point; however, you can also clean out your hot tub filter so that you can maintain the cleanliness of your water for longer.
